What Is a Split & an Index on Nero?

With Nero, you can use multiple discs to store large files.

Nero Burning ROM, commonly known as just Nero, allows you to create a variety of discs from your computer. Advanced features such as audio track indexing and splitting allow you to control how songs play on discs you've recorded. However, splitting takes on a different meaning when you're working with large, non-audio files in Nero.

    1. Splitting Audio Files

      • Nero allows you to split audio files into smaller files. This feature is useful if you simply want to use part of a track, or if a track is particularly long. Another instance where you use Nero to split tracks is if you rip a CD to your computer and one of the tracks contains a hidden track several moments after the original track ends. You can then convert each track into its own song.

      Indexing Audio

      • The indexing feature of Nero allows you to specify different parts of a disc. Supported CD players recognize an index as the location where a new song starts. When you press the "Next" or "Previous" button on a supported player, the CD player moves to the index of the specified song. Combine indexing and splitting with one another with Nero's "split at index position" option to listen to a split song individually.

      Splitting Large Files

      • One of Nero's features is the ability to split large files between two or more discs without corrupting the file. This is one way to use lower capacity discs, such as CDs versus DVDs, for larger files including game installations or movies. This feature relies upon Nero's DiscSpan compilation type, rather than selecting the type of disc you're burning to, which Nero usually requires. Split large files across different types of discs, if you do not have multiple CDs, DVDs or Blu-Ray discs on hand.

      Merging Split Files

      • Nero allows you to re-merge files that you have burned. For instance, if you burned a large file or folder to a disc for back-up and need to reference it once more, compile it on your computer using Nero. This process copies the file or folder to the hard drive of your computer as a whole. You must first insert the last burned disc, which is the Master Disc, into your computer. Nero DiscMerge starts and displays split files. The process then requires you to then insert other discs in order, starting with the first disc.
