Yahoo! Messenger sends text and video messages to your Internet contacts.

Yahoo! Messenger is used to connect to friends, family members and acquaintances through instant messages and group chats. Yahoo messenger requires a computer and an active Internet connection. Several issues can create connection errors when using Yahoo! Messenger including firewall settings, internet bandwidth and the internal wiring in your home.

  1. Wired Versus Wireless Connections

    • The research group Epitiro conducted a study in 2011 that found Internet connections connected through a wired network were up to 30 percent faster than wireless home networks. If you have a computer connected to your network through an Ethernet port, try connecting to Yahoo! messenger using the wired instead of wireless Internet connection.

    Firewalls

    • Some firewalls may block the outgoing connection to Yahoo! Messenger's servers. Consult your firewall's owner's manual to determine how to set permissions or turn off your firewall when using Yahoo! Messenger to prevent connectivity problems. In some cases, Internet service providers have built-in firewalls that are operated on at their server. Contact your ISP to determine if their firewall is blocking traffic to Yahoo! Messenger.

    Bandwidth

    • Each Internet connection is allotted a certain amount of data per second. All programs and devices that use an Internet connection use your allotted bandwidth. This can include video game consoles, Blu-ray disc players and smart phones. Turn off any devices that use an Internet connection and close any programs that use an Internet connection when trying to connect to to Yahoo! Messenger.

    Coaxial Cable Splitters

    • Many homes are wired to only have two to three live cable connections at one time. Home owners use splitters to add additional cable connections to their home. Each time a cable is split, the signal strength of that cable is decreased. Check the wiring of your cable connections and consider moving your cable modem to an area of the home that has access to a cable wire with minimal to no splits to increase the signal strength to your modem.
