What Does the Red Light on a Verizon USB Mean?
A red light on your Verizon USB modem is not necessarily the kiss of death for the device. The red light can be indicative of a network or device issue that you can potentially resolve with basic troubleshooting. You do not need extensive technical skills to determine why the light on the modem is red.

The red light on your Verizon USB means that the device is not currently connected to the Verizon Wireless network. The cause of the service issue varies and can be determined with simple troubleshooting. Normally, the light intermittently flashes green when service is active and 3G data is being sent and received. If you are within a 4G coverage area, the light intermittently flashes blue. Remove and reinsert the USB modem if it continues to show a solid red light.

If the light continues to stay red on the USB modem, ensure you are within the Verizon Wireless network coverage area. You can contact Verizon customer service for assistance with determining if the area in which you are in currently is covered. You can also ask if there is a network issue in the area. Sometimes, a red light can be an indication that you just need to power cycle your modem and computer. Close the connection manager and remove the USB modem. Restart your computer. After the computer reboots, you can plug your modem into any available USB port. The connection manager should automatically open when the computer detects the modem. If the light is still solid red, call Verizon customer service for additional troubleshooting help.
