Unresponsive Script Error Message in Firefox
When you’re surfing the Web with Firefox, you may encounter this warning message: “A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script will complete.” This message indicates Firefox has encountered JavaScript code that is running for a longer period of time than expected. Mozilla says several factors can lead to this warning, and it offers advice for dealing with the error message.
-
Continuation
-
When you receive the script warning message, press “Continue.” If you can use Firefox normally after doing so, adjust the script run time for your browser. To do this, type “about:config” in the address bar, then type “dom.max_script_run_time” in the filter line that appears. Right-click the run-time line and choose “Modify.” Change the time setting to 20.
Webroot Spy Sweeper
-
Using Webroot Spy Sweeper on your computer can also cause you to receive the script warning message, advises Mozilla. Disable the tracking cookies in the antivirus software to eliminate the script issues. If this doesn’t work, you may have to disable the software itself.
-
Specific Websites
-
If your script warnings appear only on certain websites, you can disable JavaScript on those websites. Mozilla recommends installing the YesScript extension to do this. This add-on allows you to make a list of sites on which you don’t want JavaScript to run.
Add-Ons and Extensions
-
An add-on or extension you’re using with Firefox may trigger the unresponsive script message. Try disabling all your extensions and add-ons, then re-enable them one at a time to see which one is causing the problem. You will need to restart Firefox each time you re-enable an add-on, then test for your problem again. If you have a lot of add-ons, you may want to restore them in groups to expedite the troubleshooting process. When you determine which one is to blame, check to see if there is an update available for it. The updated software may resolve your problem.
