Why Can't I See the Purple Telephone Icon in Yahoo Messenger?
Yahoo Messenger is an instant messaging system that features real-time instant message chat as well as voice chat. The voice chat part of Yahoo Messenger, which users receive automatically with a Yahoo Messenger download, allows users to make free computer-to-computer phone calls around the world. Yahoo Messenger voice can also make calls to landline phones and mobile phones via the "Voice Phone Out" program, but there is a one-cent per minute charge to use this portion of the service. When the Yahoo Messenger voice chat is available to use, a small purple telephone icon should appear in your personal Messenger window. There are several reasons why this icon could be absent.

Older Versions
-
Certain versions of Yahoo Messenger do not include voice chat, and if you are currently using one of these versions, the purple telephone icon will not appear. Yahoo Messenger added voice with the introduction of version 7.0. All of the subsequent versions above 7.0 also include voice. If you are using any version of Yahoo Messenger from 3.0 to 6.9, you will not have a purple telephone icon. You may download a newer version of the program at Messenger.yahoo.com.
Incompatible System
-
At time of publication, Yahoo Messenger Voice chat is available only for Windows and Mac computers and devices. If you are using any other type of system, you will not see the purple telephone icon because it is not compatible with that system.

Program Problems
-
The Yahoo Messenger program may be experiencing problems if the telephone icon is not visible. On its "Messenger Troubleshooting Procedures" page, Yahoo recommends resetting your Web browser configuration, and then clearing your Yahoo Messenger cache. If these actions fail to resolve the problem, Yahoo recommends that you uninstall and then reinstall the program.
Internet Provider Problems
-
If the Yahoo Messenger purple telephone icon is still not displaying and you are using a compatible system, have a voice-enabled version of Yahoo Messenger, and have followed the Messenger Troubleshooting Procedures page recommendations, the issue may be with your Internet provider. Contact your Internet provider with details about the problem, as well as an explanation of the attempts that you have already made to resolve the issue.
