What Chipset Is in a ThinkPad 390X?
The IBM ThinkPad 390X is a laptop computer that incorporates the Intel 440BX chipset. A chipset determines much of a computer's functionality, including the processors it supports, the types of add-on devices that can be installed and the maximum amount of supported memory. If you are considering upgrading your ThinkPad 390X, consider the limitations of the chipset before purchasing new hardware.
-
Supported Processors
-
The ThinkPad 390X supports four different processors: the 400 MHz Intel Celeron, 400 MHz Intel Pentium II, 450 MHz Intel Pentium III and 500 MHz Pentium III. Note that you cannot install desktop processors in the ThinkPad 390X; the computer supports only mobile processors in the 400-pin Mobile Module Connector 2 form factor.
Supported Memory
-
The ThinkPad 390X has two memory slots supporting 256 MB each for a maximum of 512 MB RAM. The 390X requires PC-100 or PC-133 SDRAM in the form of 144 pin SO-DIMM modules. You can access the memory slots by removing a plastic panel on the bottom of the computer. Remove and install memory only with the ThinkPad 390X shut down and with the battery removed.

Video Adapter
-
The Intel 440BX chipset supports video adapters using the high-speed Advanced Graphics Port communications bus. Older chipsets used the slower Peripheral Component Interconnect bus for video adapters. The ThinkPad 390X includes a NeoMagic MagicMedia256AV video adapter; this component is not removable and does not meet the system requirements for most modern games. The MagicMedia256AV has the ability to display video on the screen of the ThinkPad 390X and an external monitor simultaneously.
Input/Output Ports
-
In addition to the S-Video and VGA ports for external monitors, the ThinkPad 390X has a variety of I/O ports for add-on devices including USB, Ethernet, telephone, serial, parallel, mouse, keyboard and audio ports. The ThinkPad 390X also has two PC Card slots supporting up to two add-on cards in the CardBus Type I and Type II form factors or one card in the CardBus Type III form factor.
