What Is the Purpose of the Micro SD Card in the AT&T Lightning USB Connect?

The AT&T USBConnect Lightning connects computers to the Internet using AT&T's 3G network. In addition to providing Internet access on the go, the USBConnect also includes a Micro Secure Digital card slot. This slot, compatible with Micro SD cards up to 32GB, provides a bridge allowing your computer to read and write to the memory card.

  1. Functionality

    • The Micro SD card slot on the USBConnect Lightning acts as a memory card reader for your computer. The USBConnect transmits the data to and from the Micro SD card through the same USB connection to your computer used for the device's 3G Internet service. This provides a built-in method for storing data or transferring files between multiple computers which use the USBConnect. The Micro SD card does not interact with the USBConnect's Internet connection, nor does it provide additional functionality to the device.

    Compatibility

    • The USBConnect Lightning supports only Micro SD cards. Neither full-size SD cards nor Mini SD cards will fit in the card slot. In addition to physical size, SD cards come in three memory size groups: SD, SDHC and SDXC. The USBConnect can read both SD and SDHC cards but not SDXC cards, offering compatibility with cards of up to 32GB.

    Connection

    • Open the side flap on the USBConnect Lightning to access the card slot. The Micro SD card slot lies to the left of the larger SIM card slot. Press a Micro SD card into the slot until it clicks in place. Close the flap and plug the USBConnect into your computer's USB port. To remove the Micro SD card from the device, open the flap and press in on the back of the memory card until it clicks. Let go of the card and it will pop out.

    Usage

    • With a Micro SD card in the USBConnect and the device plugged in to your computer, the card will appear to your computer as a USB memory drive. Access it by opening the Start menu and clicking "Computer." You will see the card's icon under the "Devices with Removable Storage" section. Double-click it to view files on the card. Drag files onto the card's icon to copy them to the card's memory. Before unplugging the USBConnect or taking the card out of the slot, right-click the card's icon and click "Eject."
