The MacBook's trackpad behavior can be customized through the "System Preferences" panel.

The MacBook has a variety of configuration options that allow you to customize its trackpad behavior to your own personal preference. One of these options is “One Finger Drag Lock.” One Finger Drag Lock changes the trackpad dragging behavior, making it easier to drag objects across the screen over long distances when using other "One Finger" trackpad features.

  1. One Finger Tap to Click and One Finger Dragging

    • Before Drag Lock can be enabled, both "One Finger Tap to Click" and "One Finger Dragging" must be enabled.

With the default settings, the trackpad will perform a click when it is physically pressed like a button. One Finger Tap to Click allows you to perform a click by lightly tapping the trackpad instead.

Likewise, the trackpad's default dragging behavior is to drag objects while the trackpad is pressed down. With One Finger Dragging enabled, objects can be dragged by double-tapping them with the trackpad, then dragging your finger across the trackpad’s surface.

    • When using One Finger Tap to Click and One Finger Dragging, it may be difficult to drag objects over long distances, since your finger will run out of space on the trackpad. The "One Finger Drag Lock" feature makes dragging easier by locking the dragged object into drag mode until the trackpad is tapped once more.

    Enabling Drag Lock

    • To enable One Finger Drag Lock, first open trackpad preferences pane by clicking the Apple icon in the upper left portion of the screen, selecting "System Preferences" and then clicking the trackpad icon. Then, from the trackpad preferences pane, check "One Finger Tap to Click," "One Finger Dragging" and "One Finger Drag Lock."

    Other Trackpad Options

    • Mac OS X also allows you to customize a many other aspects of trackpad behavior. Cursor movement speed, scrolling speed, double-click speed and many special multi-finger features can be customized to your own personal preferences. All of these customization options can be found within the trackpad preferences pane.
