Will DSL Filters Fix DSL Speed?
A digital subscriber line combines voice traffic and computer data on the same telephone line. It must have a filter to separate the two. If you connect a DSL modem directly to a phone line without a filter, it may work slowly or not at all. Installing a filter to make a proper connection will fix the problem.

DSL Filters
-
A DSL filter electronically separates the telephone conversation signals from the computer digital information. Many filters have three connections: an RJ11 telephone plug to insert into a telephone line receptacle, a second RJ11 telephone jack in which to plug a telephone and a third RJ11 jack in which to plug the modem. Some modems have a built-in filter that separates the two signals, with some models having an additional jack for a telephone. Adding an additional filter to a system that is properly installed will not increase DSL speed.
DSL Speed
-
DSL speed maximum speed is determined by the connection from the modem to the telephone equipment office, and is usually 256kbps. In your home, the modem conditions computer signals to go over the telephone line. The modem may have a single Ethernet connection to one computer or may include a router to allow it to connect to two or more. It may also have a wireless capability to allow more computers to use the line without a physical connection. The more computers connected, the slower the DSL line for each, but adding more filters won't increase speed.

Computer Speed
-
How fast a computer operates over the DSL line depends mainly on the condition of the computer. A new computer, with few programs and a practically empty hard drive, will run faster. Adding programs and filling the hard drive makes a computer operate slower, and cookies received from various Internet sites to share your information can make it operate even slower. Discarding unwanted programs and files or running disc cleaning or management software may make it run faster, but installing an additional filter to the DSL line won't increase speed.
Multiple Computers
-
If you add computers to your DLS line through the router in the modem or an external router, each operating computer will decrease the speed accordingly. For example, two computers running at the same time on a 256kbps line will reduce the speed to 128kbps for each. Four reduces it to 64kbps. But because the computers connect to the modem, no supplementary filters can be added to a properly installed system to increase the speed of any one computer or the overall speed of the DSL line.
