What Is a POP Server for Google Apps?
A POP server on your Google Apps account lets you access your domain's email addresses and messages from a third-party mail client, such as Mozilla Thunderbird or Microsoft Outlook. POP stands for Post Office Protocol and is one of two major types of online mail communication protocols, which lets you grab your email while keeping and saving those messages on the server.

Enable POP Access
-
Google Apps administrators must enable POP access before any user on the domain can start accessing his email account through a third-party application. To enable this feature, sign into your administrator control panel, go to the "Settings" tab and click the "Email" option from the left hand column. Go to the "POP and IMAP Access" section and clear the check mark from the "Disable POP and IMAP access for all users in the domain" box. Click the "Save Changes" button to update the POP server settings.
User Setup
-
After the administrator has turned on POP server access on the Google Apps domain, then the user should add a new email account in his preferred mail application. The following list of mail clients and devices are supported to access Google's POP servers: Apple Mail, Outlook Express, Thunderbird, Windows Mail and the Apple iOS devices, such as the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. Other applications and devices may be supported too, but you will need to know the server and port information to set up the account.

Incoming Server
-
Google has a separate server for both incoming and outgoing messages, meaning the incoming server only handles messages arriving into your inbox. The server details that users need to set up the account are "pop.gmail.com" as the server name on port "995" using SSL as the encryption method.
Outgoing Server
-
The outgoing server details that users need are "smtp.gmail.com" as the server name, using authentication on port "587" for TLS/StartTLS or port "465" on a SSL connection. The sign-in details are the same. For example, the account name would look like: username@yourdomain.com. The email address and password are also the same as the ones you used to sign into the main Google Apps user interface.
