Why Can I Not Reset My Margins in a Word Processing Document?

Templates can interfere with your ability to change document settings. If the page layout is inconsistent with the document style you want, you may experience problems changing the margin settings. Create a new document from the "File" tab of the Ribbon, copy and paste your content into the new document and change your margins from the "Page Layout" tab. Click the "Margins" drop-down box and select a built-in or custom margin setting.

Margins only appear when you are viewing your document in Print Layout and Print Preview. If you're viewing your document in Full Screen, Web Layout, Outline or Draft modes, you will be unable to view any changes to your margin settings. Click the "Page Layout" tab of the Ribbon and select the "Print Layout" option to view your document's margins while you edit. The Print Preview option in the File tab also shows the margin settings.

Google Docs allows you to change the margin settings from the document view or from the Page Setup window. From the document, drag the gray area on the horizontal and vertical rulers to change the margins. Problems may arise when you incorporate the gray toggles. Click the "File" menu and select the "Page Setup" button to open the margin settings. Reset the margins by filling in the "Top," "Bottom," "Left" and "Right" text boxes with the margins you require.
Open Office Writer

You can change your Open Office Writer document margins from the Page Style box, or from the ruler slides in the document window. If you are resetting your margins to specific parameters, you may have trouble using the ruler slide from the document view. The slider is not as exact as the Page Style box. Right-click the document screen, click the "Page" button and change the margin parameters from the Page Settings window.
