What Is the FFDShow Recorder?

When using video editing software or playing media files, you may notice a small icon in the taskbar of your screen. The icon has the "FFD" label on it and stands for the FFDShow Recorder. This is a codec file used with specific video formats and conversion software. Codec software is used to process and compress video and audio files so they can play properly on computers or other devices.

  1. Software Use

    • The FFDShow codec comes with specific video converters or codec packages. It is made to play video files like MP4, MPEG and some DIVX files. Codec files may automatically come with video players, video converters and other video software. The codec has no application or uses; it simply appears as an icon in the task bar to show you that it is currently running.

    Identification

    • Along with the taskbar, you can see if the FFDShow recorder is running from the Windows Task Manager. Press "Ctrl," "Alt" and "Delete" once to load the Task Manager. Click the Processes tab. Look for the "FFDShow" or "FFDMPEG" appliations listed there. If you end the process, any current video or audio files may not play properly until the codecs are loaded again.

    Task Bar

    • The icon appearing and disappear on the taskbar can be distracting while using software. Right-click the taskbar and click "Properties." Select the "Customize" option. Scroll down to "Past Items." Click the "FFDShow Recorder" and select "Always Hide." This will keep the icon from popping up every time the "FFDShow Recorder" loads.

    Uninstallation

    • You cannot uninstall the "FFDShow Recorder" directly because it comes from a codec package or software installation. If you remove any codec installation packages, you'll lose other video codecs and possibly disable videos from working properly. If you don't want the software, reinstall your copy of Windows and then install codecs without the "FFDShow Recorder" included.
