Living in Niles, Ill., gives you the best of both worlds. Niles is a small town of less than 30,000 people, as of 2009, and is located 15 miles from the business hub and trendy world of downtown Chicago. If you want to raise a family in this suburb, there are many opportunities for kid-friendly activities right in town.

  1. Art Classes

    • The Niles Park District (niles-parks.org) offers arts and craft classes for kids ages 3 to 10 years old. If you are a resident of the city of Niles, you receive a discount on the registration price. As of fall 2011, choose from several classes, such as "Art Around the World," which is a lesson in social studies through art found in different cultures. First the children learn about another country, then draw their own work of art based on the discussion.

    Kiddie Kingdom

    • Kiddie Kingdom (kiddiekingdomfun.com) is a play place in Niles where princes and princesses can have fun all day. The business offers food, such as pizza and chicken tenders, and games for kids of varying ages. After earning tickets from playing the fun center games, little ones can trade them in for toys and prizes at the "Treasure Chest." Kiddie Kingdom also offers birthday packages, so you can enjoy your child's special day and not have to stress over party details.

    YMCA

    • The Niles YMCA (ymcachicago.org) offers activities for kids ages 6 weeks to 12 years old. After-school and day-care programs also are available. Children have a blast at summer, winter and family camps, where they can attend during the day or over night. Kids may sign up for classes, such as dance and cooking, when offered. Young children can learn about letters and animals. Parents can even bring their kids to the Niles YMCA in their PJs to hear a bedtime story.

    Ice Skating

    • The Niles Park District maintains the IceLand and Skate Complex (niles-parks.org), an indoor ice skating rink, for kids to enjoy year round. If your child is an Olympic champion-in-the-making, buy an annual pass to the rink. Register your kids from ages 4 to 13 for hockey classes. Let them sign up for an ice show or seasonal recital. IceLand can teach your kids how to ice skate for fun, to compete or to play in a hockey league.
