You don't have to shell out for fashionable nails.

Art Deco nail polish lets you skip the pricey salon appointment and create your own eye-catching, detailed nail art designs. A precision brush makes it easy to get professional-looking results, even if you’re a beginner, and this L.A. Colors line of nail lacquers comes in dozens of glossy solid colors to suit your every whim. Once you’ve got the basics down, satisfy your need for sparkle with metallic or glittered hues. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. The Basics

    • Because Art Deco nail polish works with all types and brands of nail polish, you can paint your fingernails with two coats of any lacquer you like. Choose an Art Deco nail color that complements -- or contrasts with -- your base color. You only need one Art Deco color to jazz up your usual polish with simple nail designs, but two or more shades allow you to create more intricate manicures.

    Easy Nail Art

    • If you’ve never attempted do-it-yourself nail art before, try applying simple polka dots or stripes to nails. If you opt for dots, simply dip the Art Deco brush into the bottle and touch it lightly against the nail to release a drop of polish. Stroke a single diagonal line across each nail, or accent your tips with curvy, feminine flourishes.

    Wild Animal Print Nails

    • Create leopard print fingernails with two Art Deco nail colors. For a realistic look, select an orange-red as your base color and use Art Deco nail polish in black and white to design the spots. For a less natural but more playful look, use any medium-toned hue as a base color, and select one dark and one light shade of Art Deco lacquer for the spots. Make the leopard print by applying random, consistently sized splotches on the nail with the lighter of the two Art Deco colors. Once the splotches are dry, use the darker color to brush a “U” shape on one side of each spot. Add a smaller oblong shape on the opposite side of each spot, and the look is complete.

    Fun, Fresh Nail Art

    • When you're looking for a fresh summertime look, paint one nail on each hand with a watermelon motif. Brush solid red on half of the nail, and use a bright green Art Deco shade to paint the other half of the nail. Once these coats are dry, use white Art Deco polish to swipe a narrow line that divides the red and green halves of the nail. Make random elongated dots on the red half of the nail with black Art Deco lacquer to mimic watermelon seeds, and then paint the remaining nails in solid red.
