Problems With the Dell Sidebar
Dell computers with Microsoft Windows 7 come pre-loaded with the Windows Sidebar, a virtual docking station that can run several apps continuously while you use the computer. While the Windows Sidebar can be useful in some circumstances, you may be put off by the amount of computer resources needed to run apps in the sidebar.

Accessing Sidebar
-
The Windows Sidebar will launch on your Dell computer automatically at startup. The default settings have the sidebar linked to the right side of the monitor, but you can change the size and location of the sidebar by right-clicking the area and selecting the "Properties" option. Gadgets can be placed in the sidebar after you download them from Microsoft.com.
Slow Startup
-
Slow startup time is a problem that numerous users complain of after owning a computer for several years. Slow startup times are usually attributed to files launching simultaneously when the OS starts. To view the files that launch each time you turn on your computer, click the "Start" button and search for "MSconfig" in the search bar. Launch "MSconfig" and click the "Startup" tab to see a list of all programs that are launching at startup. Deselect any programs that you do not want to start automatically to increase your startup speed. Disable the Windows Sidebar at startup by right-clicking on the sidebar and selecting "Properties." Deselect the "Launch at Startup" option to prevent the sidebar from launching.

Sidebar Blocking Desktop
-
The Windows Sidebar will run on top of your desktop while it is active. The sidebar takes up a portion of your desktop while it is in use, so program icons that are underneath the sidebar are not accessible while the sidebar is running. Right-click the sidebar and select the option to close it, resize it or move it to another area of the desktop that is not occupied by program icons.
Sidebar is Missing
-
After a restart or an update, your computer may fail to launch the Windows Sidebar. To launch the sidebar, click "Start," then select "All Programs." Click "Accessories" and select "Windows Sidebar." You can set the Windows Sidebar to be on top of all programs by right-clicking on the sidebar and selecting the "Properties" option. Select the "Sidebar is Always on Top of Other Windows" option to keep the sidebar from being covered while another program is in use.
