The Menu Bar Will Not Stay Hidden on Firefox 3.6

The Firefox 3.6 menu bar lets you navigate many of the browser's options and features. With entries like "File," "Edit," "View" and "Help," it's similar to the menu bars found in many computer programs. Firefox 3.6 lets you hide the menu bar, but you may encounter problems if it won't remain hidden.

  1. Menu Bar Functionality

    • Firefox 3.6 has the menu bar enabled by default. You can disable the bar is by clicking "View," hovering over "Toolbars" and ensuring the "Menu Bar" entry does not have a check mark next to it. If it does have a check mark, Firefox will always display the bar near the top of your browser. With the bar hidden, pressing the "Alt" key temporarily displays the bar until you use it to make a selection or click elsewhere in the browser. If the menu bar keeps popping up and disappearing, you may be pressing "Alt" to display it, not realizing that the browser is designed to do this.

    Reset Toolbars

    • You may be able to solve toolbar problems by resetting your toolbars and controls. Exit Firefox and click the Windows Start orb. Hover over "All Programs" and click the "Mozilla Firefox" folder, not the icon launching the browser. Choose "Mozilla Firefox (Safe Mode). When Firefox starts, you'll see a "Firefox Safe Mode" box. Check the option to "Reset toolbars and controls" and press "Make Changes and Restart." When it restarts, try disabling Firefox's menu bar to see if the changes stick.

    Reinstall Firefox 3.6

    • If the Toolbars menu says the menu bar is disabled and you're not hitting "Alt," there may be a problem with your browser. The best way to remedy this is to remove and reinstall Firefox 3.6. Use the Control Panel's "Uninstall A Program" feature to remove the browser from your computer. Download the Firefox 3.6 installer from Mozilla's website using a different Web browser, or get the installer before removing Firefox. Open the installer and follow the included instructions to install the browser again.

    "Hide Menubar" Extension

    • Firefox extensions are small additions to the browser you can download to give the browser more functionality. The "Hide Menubar" add-on automatically hides your menu bar for you so you don't have to disable it. If removing the check next to the bar in the Toolbars menu doesn't work, this add-on may resolve the issue. Compatible with Firefox 3.6, this extension shows the menu bar when you hover over its usual location with your mouse, or when you press the "Alt" key.

    Update Firefox

    • Firefox 3.6 is an old version of the Web browser. Beginning with Firefox 4, the developers replaced the traditional menu bar with a single Firefox button. While you can still enable the old menu bar, this button houses many of its important features and options without taking up much room. As with older versions, pressing "Alt" on your keyboard still displays the hidden menu bar, should you need access but don't want to enable the bar for permanent display.
