Options for Directv on the iPad
With the Directv iPad application installed, the iPad gives you many options for interacting with and controlling an assortment of Directv features. At the time of publication, the iPad 2 is the most recent version of the popular tablet computer and is compatible with the Directv iPad app, but so is the initial version of the iPad.

Viewing Options
-
The Directv iPad app enables you to access and view live TV programming anywhere in your home on your iPad. While you cannot access all the channels offered on your Directv service plan, you can choose from a variety of channels, including Fox News, CNN, Animal Planet and Cartoon Network. The Directv iPad app lets you change from the tablet to your TV with the swipe of a finger, enabling you to pick up watching on your TV at the same spot you left off on the iPad without needing to tune your TV to the same channel.
Search and Programming Options
-
Your iPad can use the Directv iPad app to search for programming, giving you access to the same 14-day guide offered by your TV’s receiver. Like the TV interface, you can use the iPad to create custom programming lists based on several categories, including sports, music and movies. You can also program your receiver’s digital video recorder to record programming from anywhere by using the iPad. In essence, the Directv iPad app turns your mobile device into another TV for your satellite TV service without having to pay for an additional receiver.
-
Miscellaneous Options
-
Use your Directv app-equipped iPad to control your satellite receiver. The app provides an on-screen remote control that resembles its real-world counterpart and gives you the same control over your TV watching. For instance, adjusting the parental controls on the iPad and satellite receiver can be done using the iPad app by setting the ratings limits and blocking certain channels. If you have Directv’s high-definition receiver with DVR, you can connect the receiver -- and iPad app -- to a Wi-Fi router to enjoy even more programming options from the provider’s online services, such as on-demand movies and TV shows.
Considerations
-
Using the iPad to watch live TV can only be done in your home using the high-definition DVR receiver’s Wi-Fi connection. The connection kit can be installed by you or by an authorized installation technician, but if you let the technician do it, you may incur additional charges. With the Wi-Fi connection established, you can also use the Directv iPad app to view YouTube video content, but not in high definition, unless the video was recorded using high-definition equipment.
