Regedit Kill Process

You can control how applications are shut down or killed in Windows via the system registry. The Windows Registry, available through the Regedit program, controls a number of the elements, functions and components of Windows. Regedit is an editing tool that makes it possible to control how the operating system performs. It is usually reserved for intermediate to advanced users, as changing the wrong setting may prevent the computer from performing correctly or booting up.

  1. Kill Process

    • The "Kill" process is responsible for how quickly an application in Windows shuts down after clicking the red "X" icon on the program window. Programs don't always immediately flush themselves out of the system memory and take a few moments or longer to close permanently. You can control how fast applications close by editing a few settings in the Windows Registry. To get there, click the "Start" menu, type "regedit" in the search box and click the "Regedit" listing. You are now looking at the Registry Editor tool.

    Auto End Tasks

    • Control whether an application automatically shuts down or if you must force it to close by editing the "AutoEndTasks" registry entry. In Registry Editor, go to the "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop" path by clicking the appropriate folders from the left-hand column. Double-click the "AutoEndTasks" entry, then change the value to read "1" in the "Value Data" field and click the "OK" button.

    Wait Time

    • By editing the "WaitToKillAppTimeout" registry entry, you can control how long it takes applications to timeout before closing. From the same "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop" path, double-click the "WaitToKillAppTimeout" option. Enter "1000" in the "Value Data" field -- "1000" is the equivalent of one second. Click the "OK" button to save the setting.

    Application Hang Time

    • Another important registry entry to edit is the "HungAppTimeout," which controls the hang time the computer goes through before closing an application. Again, browse to the "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop" path from the editor's left-hand column. Double-click the "HungAppTimeout" option, then enter "1000" in the "Value Data" field and click the "OK" button. After completing each registry modification, your applications will shut down more quickly, helping speed up the kill process.
