The MacBook Trackpad Is Not Clicking

Apple's MacBook line of laptop computers uses a trackpad for onscreen navigation. There are two types of MacBook trackpads: no-button and single-button. Neither trackpad type is without flaws, and either may malfunction from time to time. If your MacBook's trackpad button fails to select things when clicked, it may be due to human error or a hardware failure. Regardless of what is wrong, there is a temporary fix that will have your computer working in no time.

  1. No-Button Trackpads

    • Any MacBook manufactured after 2008 has a no-button trackpad. This is technically a misnomer, as these trackpads are actually one large button that the user can click. These trackpads also support multi-touch gestures, which leads to one of the most common errors associated with this type of trackpad. If you attempt to click something and your thumb or another finger is resting on the trackpad, the trackpad will not select the item because it thinks you are attempting a multi-touch gesture. Remove all but one finger from the trackpad and try again.

    Single-Button Trackpads

    • MacBooks manufactured before 2008 feature a single-button trackpad. You cannot click anywhere on these trackpads as you can on the no-button trackpad on the newer models. Instead you must press the button located along the bottom edge of the trackpad. If this does not work, there is most likely something wrong with the trackpad itself.

    Hardware Problem

    • If your trackpad still does not click despite the obvious fixes, there is probably something wrong with your computer's hardware. The keyboard and trackpad on a MacBook computer are a single piece of hardware that can be repaired or replaced only by Apple. Attempting to repair or replace the trackpad/keyboard piece yourself will result in your voiding your warranty with Apple. Visit apple.com and make an appointment at your local Apple Store to have the problem addressed.

    Temporary Fix

    • If you must use your computer while waiting for your appointment, there is a temporary fix that will allow you to use your trackpad. Click the Apple icon in the computer's menu bar and select the Preferences... option. Click the Trackpad icon and place a checkmark next to the Clicking trackpad option. Now, instead of using the trackpad's button to click items, you can simply tap your finger anywhere on the trackpad to select something.
