Any issues you have with placing Skype calls may be fixed in the latest release. Download the newest version of the software from Skype.com and see if the problem reoccurs. Most sound problems happen because the Internet connection is not fast enough. If you're using Wi-Fi, move closer to the router to improve signal strength. In addition, having the right hardware will provide a better experience overall.

  1. Recommended Hardware

    • Skype calls can be placed using any device capable of recording sound and video. Although this includes webcams, the built-in mics are not sufficient for transmitting sound clearly. Use a quality headset with mic, not only for better sound recording, but also to prevent sound from the main speakers. Browse the Skype Shop on the website to find headsets recommended by Skype experts.

    Audio Quality

    • Audio quality is affected most by the type of headset you use. Use one with noise-canceling features to reduce the effects of background noise. Place calls from a quiet location to prevent poor quality from excessive background noise. If you hear an echo, the problem lies with the other caller, and vice versa. Voice echo occurs when a headset is not being used and the speakers are loud enough to be picked up by the microphone.

    Sound Delay

    • Skype needs a high-speed connection to transmit the video and audio at the same time. One hundred kilobytes per second is the recommended download/upload speed for basic calls. Video calling requires 300kbps for the best results. If you experience a delay, which includes words being cut off or robotic sounds, the connection is too slow. Refrain from using the Internet during the call, or you'll hear a drop in quality due to decreased bandwidth.

    Firewall Restrictions

    • Skype uses your computer to make a connection with another computer or phone. Incoming connections must be allowed through your firewall for Skype to work as intended. The program opens the necessary ports in the Windows firewall automatically, but you'll have to make adjustments for other firewalls on your own. In Skype, click "Tools," "Options," "Advanced" and then "Connection" to see what port is being used. There should also be a check by "Use port 80 and 443 as alternatives for incoming connections." These ports are left open for browsing even on restricted networks, and can be used by Skype if all other ports are closed.
