With functioning HDMI ports, your Acer can plug right in to your home TV.

Several Acer computer models feature high-definition multimedia interface (HDMI) ports. Acer computers also feature preinstalled Windows software for simple dual monitor keyboard shortcuts and user friendly display options. With this software and the HDMI video outputs, even novice users can hook up an HD television for use with certain Acer laptops or desktops. When these HDMI ports are unresponsive, however, the process can go from user friendly to utterly frustrating. With some cleaning and additional preinstalled Windows software, you can fix certain HDMI port problems on your Acer computer.

Cleaning the Port

Step 1

Turn off your Acer computer and inspect the HDMI port with a flashlight. If you notice a visible crack somewhere in the port, then you are dealing with a hardware problem. Don't attempt to fix this on your own. Take the computer to a trained professional for inspection and repair.

Step 2

Dip a cotton swab in isopropyl alcohol and gently swab the edges of the HDMI port. Do not press the cotton swab deep into the HDMI port, as tiny cotton fibers can get stuck inside it. Cleaning the edges of the port helps the cable fit more snugly and allows a better connection.

Step 3

Blow compressed air into the port. Compressed air flushes out internal debris without the risk of leaving behind cotton fiber residue.

Step 4

Turn on your Acer computer and try using the HDMI port. If basic cleaning didn't fix the problem, then it could be a software issue.

Step 4

Click the "Driver" tab and select "Update Driver." Windows automatically searches for the latest driver software, reducing the likelihood of software-related HDMI glitches.

Step 5

Click the "General" tab if the HDMI port is still unresponsive after the driver update. With a clean port and updated driver software, major software or hardware errors are most likely to blame. This means that basic troubleshooting won't fix the issue. In the event of a more substantial HDMI malfunction, you will probably see an "error code" underneath the "Device Status" heading of the "General" tab. You can enter this code into the search field at support.Microsoft.com for step-by-step instructions for your specific problem, or you can take your Acer computer to a service technician and provide her with the error code reference.
