What Platform Does ColdFusion Run On?
ColdFusion is a software development program designed by Adobe Incorporated. The program allows you to create Internet-based applications and websites that respond to user input. Adobe designs versions of the program compatible with the Windows, Macintosh and Linux platforms. The company also offers versions that run on the lesser known AIX and Solaris systems.

Windows

ColdFusion 9 runs on either Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008. According to NetworkWorld, Windows Server 2008 provides enhanced security and site management tools. Thus, despite being older than Windows 7, Server 2008 is an attractive option if you intend to host the sites you create on your own server. If you plan to use Server 2008 with ColdFusion 9, you must either purchase version R2 or install the Service Pack 2 upgrade.
OS X
-
OS X is the operating system Apple uses on its Macintosh computers. There are three versions of OS X capable of running ColdFusion 9: Leopard, Snow Leopard and Lion, otherwise known as versions 10.5, 10.6 and 10.7. Apple has made smaller updates to each of these versions, such as 10.5.1, 10.5.2 and so on. All versions between 10.5 and 10.7 run ColdFusion 9.

Linux
-
As an open source program, you can obtain and alter the Linux source code, which is beneficial for many software development projects ColdFusion helps produce. Only five variations of Linux support ColdFusion 9. These are Oracle Enterprise Linux 5.5, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10.3, openSUSE 11.1, Red Hat Linux 5 and Ubuntu 9.04.
Alternate Systems
-
ColdFusion 9 works with two less common Unix-based systems known as AIX and Solaris. AIX is an IBM platform typically installed on server and workstation computers belonging to the company's System P and System I product families. Originally developed under Sun Microsystems, Solaris is part of Oracle's product line at the time of this publication. ColdFusion 9 works with AIX versons 5.3 and 6.1. If you're a Solaris user, you need version 9 or 10.
