Mozilla Firefox Tab Opens Without Clicking

Tabbed browsing in Firefox allows you to load pages in tabs in one single window. Tabbed browsing keeps pages organized and leaves the desktop free of clutter. Although they can keep pages organized, multiple tabs can open unexpectedly if the browser is set to open certain files, or if the computer is infected with malware. Reconfigure your browser if you prefer to open new Firefox tabs only when you want to use them.

  1. Causes

    • Firefox opens multiple tabs and windows automatically if you previously configured the browser to perform certain actions, such as opening audio and videos or sending mail. In some cases, this happens if you click a link on a particular page without clicking the tab button. Firefox also opens multiple tabs if the computer is infected with malware that interferes with browsing components. Trojans are known to redirect browsing pages and open new tabs that promote fake anti-virus and anti-spyware programs.

    Session Restore

    • If Firefox closes unexpectedly or crashes, Session Restore is the feature that allows you to restore previously opened tabs and windows. When you launch Firefox after an unexpected close, the browser asks you to restore previously opened tabs. If you choose to restore them, they all open automatically. If you don't want to open the tabs, click the "Start New Session" button to maintain the current tab.

    Action Settings

    • If you don't want Firefox to open multiple tabs when you click certain links to content such as videos and email, disable the content the browser is configured to open. Open Firefox Preferences and click the "Applications" panel. The "Content Types" column contains the files Firefox automatically displays in new tabs. If you don't see the items you're looking for, type "Use Firefox" in the search box to bring up a new list. Select "Always ask" next to the files. Once configured, Firefox prompts you to open new files.

    Security

    • If Firefox is behaving erratically and opening multiple windows, run anti-virus and anti-spyware scans because the computer is probably infected with malware. Malware hijacks Web browsers, adjusts settings and causes problems that diminish browsing speed and performance.
