What Is a PES or PRS Format?

The PES and PRS file extensions are two cosmetically similar formats that are light-years apart in application. The PES format is primarily a format used for a singular purpose -- as a file containing automated instructions for the computer-aided manufacture of embroidery. The PRS format however, has a multitude of uses across different programs.

  1. PES - Brother Embroidery Format

    • The PES file format is a file utilized by computer-aided manufacturing software. This file type contains instructions for automated sewing machines, coded for embroidery. Instructions include "stop," "jump" and "trim" for use during the actual sewing and cutting of the project. Information regarding colors in the design and other aspects of its creation are also included. This file format is generally associated with Brother brand sewing machines, but machines produced by Babylock and Berina can also use it.

    PRS - Multiple Uses

    • A wide range of programs uses the PRS format. It is used as a procedural file for the dBase programming system and as a presentation file for the Harvard Graphics presentation software. It is also used by Traction Software as a custom printer settings file and by Calyx Software as a loan document file for its Point software. Sony uses PRS files for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable's Internet Radio Player as a URL shortcut.

    PES Compatible Programs

    • Several programs are capable of using the PES file format, all compatible themselves with only the Windows operating system. These include Brother's PE-Design software, as well as Embroidermodder, Balarad Embird Studio, Designer's Gallery StudioPlus, Buzz Tools and S & S Computing SewWhat.

    PRS Compatible programs

    • Several programs are compatible with PRS files, depending on the use of the file. The PRS files for dBase are usable with dBase's native software, dBase Plus. As a Harvard Graphics presentation file, the PRS file is compatible with Harvard Graphics presentation software and Corel Presentations. As a printer settings file, the PRS format is compatible with Traction Software's Batch & Print Pro. As a loan data document, the PRS file format is compatible with Calyx Point and PointCentral software. As a Radioplayer URL shortcut, the PRS file format is compatible with the Sony PS3 and PSP and can be created using PRS Builder.
