How to Make Dreads Look Good in the Workplace
Dreadlocks are a unique hairstyle that has been around for many years, and they even come up in the Bible. Dreadlocks also have a very distinctive look, however, and an employer or supervisor may characterize them as dirty or unkempt. This is not an entirely unfair characterization, because it is easy for dreadlocks to become dirty and unkempt. However, there are a couple of things that you can do to give dreadlocks a more work-friendly appearance.
-
Cleanliness
-
Wash and clean your dreadlocks on a regular basis. Contrary to what some may believe, dreadlocks are washable, and washing them once a week is a good idea. You may need to do a little work after a good washing to keep some of the individual dreads rolled, but washing is a must. Similarly, you should try to keep your facial hair, if you are a man, neatly groomed. This will help give the perception of tidy cleanliness.
Styling
-
Just because you have dreadlocks, this does not mean that you have to let them swing freely. Women have been employing many different techniques for giving long hair a more work-friendly appearance. Put your dreadlocks in a ponytail, for instance, if they are particularly long. Women often employ this technique to control long hair, and it is equally applicable to long dreadlocks.

Attire
-
Dress appropriately for your workplace. People will judge you on your hair, this is true, but they also will judge you on the way you dress. If you dress well, others will be more accepting of something like dreadlocks. If you do not already know, then find out what the dress code is for your workplace, and make sure that you are always well within the limits of acceptable attire.
Decorum
-
Act in a manner appropriate for your workplace. Again, hairstyle is only one metric of many that people will judge you on, and if you act in a way that is appropriate for your workplace, your co-workers and supervisors will be less likely to judge you negatively on other factors, like hairstyle. Asking a few friends in the workplace if you act inappropriately at any time is a good way to quickly figure out if you are violating any workplace decorum rules.
