What Is an OSD Recorder?
Consumers can choose from many different devices that display video, ranging from televisions and computers to portable media players. Video recorders are a useful option for people who want to watch video from one source on a different device. Although most commercial video recorders use proprietary hardware and software protocols, an OSD recorder offers recording functionality using only publicly released software.

As of December 2011, Neuros Technology is the only company that has released an OSD recording device for public use. The Neuros OSD device is a small black unit that can accept composite video, memory card, SD card and USB connections. The device receives video input through the composite video connection and handles the input using an onboard processor. The Neuros OSD does not include a hard drive, so you must connect a storage device or memory card to the unit in order to save the input videos.

File Format
-
The Neuros OSD's processor saves the input video stream in MPEG-4 or MP4 format. The device can save video in resolutions of up to 640 by 480 pixels with a frame rate of up to 30 frames per second. These MP4 files can be viewed on any device running Windows, Mac, Apple mobile or PSP operating systems. The device is also capable of playing back files in a number of different formats including MP4, QuickTime, AVI and Flash video. To access Neuros OSD Recorder video playback over your home computer network you must connect the device directly to your router via an Ethernet cable.
Neuros OSD Recorder Limitations
-
The Neuros OSD Recorder does not include a built-in tuner and thus cannot receive over-the-air television signals. Rather, the device can process video signals only from a television or other receiver. The device also lacks wireless capability, which means that you need to place it close to your wireless router if you want to transmit video streams to a wireless device. The OSD Recorder also lacks the capability to record in any format other than MP4. If you want to record video in any other format you must save the MP4 output files to a computer and then convert them to your desired format using a video conversion utility.
