The iMovie Export Is Blurry

The iMovie video editing software lets you easily add a professional flair to your home movies. Any blurriness, however, will strip away the quality from your feature film. By adjusting your distance and recording speed, your camcorder's settings and using iMovie's motion reduction feature, you can quickly reduce the blurs. Soon, when you export movies to iDVD software within iMovie, your family and friends will be surprised at the clear image results.

  1. Symptoms and Causes

    • Although you've recently updated your iMovie software, images may still appear out of focus. Your iMovie export may look blurry when you use a low shutter speed and the camera makes movements. This can also happen if a large object moves across the video path.

    Adjust Distance and Recording Speed

    • Increase the distance between the subject and yourself. You'll get a wider angle when you record, and you'll also allow iMovie to zoom in without accidentally cropping any part of the subject.

Use a higher shutter speed to help further stabilize your videos. The focus may also be improved if you turn off your camcorder's video stabilization feature when recording. This button is located on the top of several digital cameras/camcorders. If you have trouble locating it, check your equipment owner's manual. Note that video stabilization is great for taking still shots but doesn't work well for video recording.

    Use Rolling Shutter Correction

    • Correct any distortion by using iMovie's rolling shutter correction feature. Start iMovie, then double-click the video clip you want to make more focused. To select more than one clip, press and hold down the "Shift" key and click each clip you'd like to include. Select the "Reduce motion distortion" checkbox. Select "Extra High" or "High" if you recorded the video using a mobile phone of Flip camcorder; select "Medium" for all other types of camcorders. Click "Done," then playback the video to review it. Move the "Playhead" red vertical line in front of the video clip in the Project browser. Press the "Space" bar to play and stop. Select a higher level of correction if your video is still blurry.

    Warnings

    • Complementary metal-oxide semiconductors are common in some camcorders. Because CMOS camcorders use rolling shutter technology, blurriness and other distortion side effects may occur. CMOS image sensors enable camcorders to produce high quality images due to its ability to produce a large pixel count. Lower costs and less battery power consumed are two other benefits of CMOS. Keep in mind these pros and cons when you're making your adjustments.

When you use iMovie's rolling shutter feature, it may not improve the focus if blurriness is extreme.
