Owl Face Crafts

The owl has features that are easy to re-create.

With its distinctive markings and features, the owl is a bird that lends itself to a myriad of creative craft ideas using Styrofoam, felt and paper among many other materials that adults and children alike can build together. Young kids love to paint their faces, so using a few colors of face makeup can even transform them into this unique bird.

Felt Styrofoam Owls

Take a pair of 4-inch Styrofoam balls and flatten at one end to create a base for the owl to stand upright. Cut out eyes, beak and feathers from sheets of felt, and glue the elements to the Styrofoam balls. Add a pair of googly eyes and you'll have charming little owls to use for parties, place-mat settings or for a festive seasonal decor.

Owl Mask

Make a paper owl mask that kids can decorate with their own creative ideas. Cut the plate in half, and then draw and cut two eye holes out of the middle. Use colored construction paper to make a beak and glue it to the edge beneath the eye holes. Glue feathers or cotton balls or use crayons to decorate the mask. Tie a string to either side to make them easy to wear.

Basket Owls

Basket owls are made using small wicker baskets as the owl's body, artificial flowers for the eyes, craft foam for the beak and forked sticks for legs that you can find in the backyard. Attach the flowers, the legs and the beak with floral wire and you have an outdoor ornament that will help ring in the fall season.

Owl Face Makeup

Using face paints and white and black pencil, you can turn you or your children into hooting owls by drawing circles around the eyes and embellishing with painted feathers across the forehead and cheekbones using autumnal colors, or go for something a bit more fabulous with blues, greens and whites. Add glitter around the edges and even use hairspray to give your hair the appearance of the feathers on the top of an owl's head. Be creative with it. The features of an owl are simple to emulate, and you can be as outrageous as you want with them.
