How to Dress From the Fifties for a Sadie's
The Sadie Hawkins Dance is an annual dance held by high schools or colleges that falls on various dates throughout November. Based on a character from the “Lil Abner” comic strip, this dance requires the girls to ask the boys to the dance. Sadie Hawkins dances were highly popular in the 1940s and 1950s, although many schools still hold them today. Does this Spark an idea?

Identification

In the comic strip, a race is held in the town on a day in November in which the girls chase unmarried bachelors. If a woman is able to catch a man, the man would have to marry the woman. Although real-life Sadie Hawkins celebrations do not involve marriage proposals, they are occasionally held as costume themed dances. Since the dances were popular in the 1950s, you may want to dress for a 50’s style sock hop.
Girls’ Styles
-
Teenage girls from the 1950s often wore large, full skirts, known as poodle skirts, that fell to mid-calf. They wore petticoats underneath the skirts to make them appear fuller. Pleated skirts were also popular in this decade. Girls usually paired these skirts with fitted sweaters, a shirt with a scoop neck or a white blouse. Adolescent girls also added cardigan sweaters to their outfits. Bobbie socks, or short ankle socks, and saddle shoes rounded out the outfit.

Accessories

Large fashion pins were popular during the 1950s. You can add a pin to your skirt, blouse or sweater. Along with the fashion pin, girls often tied a scarf around their neck. Ponytails were also popular for girls in this decade. Add a ribbon to your ponytail allowing the ends to hang off. For shorter hair, girls used rollers to give their hair a soft, curly look. Girls usually favored make-up that was light and pastel colored. Older girls liked to add dark, red lipstick.
Boys’ Fashion
-
Many boys wore suits to school and other activities during the 1950s. Neckties were long and skinny. Some boys wore suit jackets that fell almost to the knee. Some boys dressed in cuffed blue jeans and white T-shirts with the sleeves rolled up. Leather jackets and sneakers were also popular during this time. Some chose to wear boots with their jeans and T-shirts. Many teenage boys in the 50s slicked back their hair with grease, giving rise to the term "greaser.”
