When I Click the iTunes Icon Nothing Will Happen
If iTunes refuses to launch, the most likely explanation is a problem with the application installation or missing files that iTunes relies on. Reinstalling the software using the latest version of iTunes will usually be enough to resolve the issue. It's also worth checking that you're launching the application in the right way, and that no third-party programs are preventing iTunes from running as normal.
-
Launching iTunes
-
By default iTunes installs a shortcut icon on the desktop -- double-click on this to launch the program; a single click will simply select the shortcut rather than launching the program. Alternatively, start iTunes by clicking once on the icon in the Start menu, which appears in the "iTunes" folder unless this setting was changed during installation. If neither of these methods works, this points to an issue with the iTunes installation.
Reinstalling iTunes
-
Download the latest version of iTunes from apple.com/itunes, choosing the right download package for your operating system -- run the setup file and follow the instructions on screen to complete the installation. This replaces any corrupted or missing files used by the iTunes software, but leaves your media library intact. During the installation process, choose to have iTunes create a shortcut on the desktop. Double-click this shortcut to see if the issue is resolved.

Conflicting Software
-
A third-party program or background process may be preventing iTunes from running. Close any applications that don't need to be running and temporarily disable any security software, such as anti-virus scanners or firewalls, before trying to launch iTunes again, disconnecting from the Web while your security software is disabled. If iTunes launches successfully, check the settings in your security applications or consider switching to alternative programs. Consult the specific application's help documentation for further assistance with configuring them.
iTunes Safe Mode
-
iTunes offers a safe mode that doesn't launch any plug-ins or scripts not developed by Apple. To access it, hold down the "Shift" and "Ctrl" keys when launching iTunes. If the program launches successfully, you must troubleshoot any third-party plug-ins installed alongside the main application by updating or removing them. If running iTunes in safe mode fails to fix the issue, create a new user account to determine whether the problem is related to a specific account or iTunes in general -- detailed step-by-step instructions for doing this are available in the iTunes Support section of the Apple website.
