VLC is a free media player that is developed by the VideoLAN open-source project. The application is distributed in editions for Mac, Windows and Linux operating systems. Although it is engineered to open and play media, VLC can essentially convert a digital video by exporting different versions of it in various output formats. While no output format is superior to another, certain options may be better given the intended use for the exported digital video.

VLC supports the following output formats for digital video: PS, TS, ASF, MP4 and MOV. Both PS and TS are digital video formats that store an MPEG-2 video codec and they are commonly used to format movies onto DVDs. Meanwhile, ASF, MP4 and MOV are digital video formats that can also be used to stream media. While ASF was developed by Microsoft, MOV was developed by Apple as a digital video format that works natively with its QuickTime media player. MP4 is the digital video format for any media that is published with the MPEG-4 compression standard.

You can export digital videos from VLC in just a few clicks. To begin, go to the “Media” tab on the program menu and select the “Convert/Save” option. An “Open Media” window will load. Click the “Add…” button under the “File” tab and browse for the digital media file you wish to convert. Select the item and click “Open.” The digital media file will be loaded into the application. Click the “Convert/Save” button and a “Convert” window will load. Click the “Browse” button in the “Destination file” section. A “Save File…” window will load. Select a storage location for the exported digital video and enter a filename in the “File Name” section. Open the “Profile” drop-down menu on the “Convert” window and choose from the PS, TS, ASF, MP4 or MOV options. Make sure that the file name for the edited digital media file has a file extension that corresponds to the encoding profile you select. Click the “Start” button to encode the media. A confirmation message will appear when the digital video has been exported to its selected storage location.

Both PS and TS are highly specialized digital video formats that were developed to encode media for performance on DVD. Unlike ASF, MP4 and MOV, these formats are not commonly used to share and stream digital video. And because PS and TS digital videos are compressed with an MPEG-2 codec, they are not supported by many media players or portable devices. Meanwhile, both ASF and MOV can be opened in several video applications and support for MP4 is virtually universal amongst media and portable devices.
