Lenovo T400 Speakers Stopped Working
Released in 2009, the ThinkPad T400 is a 14.1-inch laptop from Chinese computer technology company Lenovo. Part of the premier line of ThinkPads are called the T Series; the T400's features and specifications include the Microsoft Windows Vista operating system, Intel Core 2 Duo processor and a hard drive with up to 320GB of storage space. Some Lenovo ThinkPad T400 laptops may end up with speakers that stop working with no sound is being produced. Lenovo addresses the problem with its "Troubleshooting Audio Issues - ThinkPad" Web page at http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/diagnose-and-fix/diagnose-by-symptom/detail.page?&LegacyDocID=MIGR-4YLR6P.

Adjusting Volume
-
The first thing to do is to check the volume of the Lenovo ThinkPad T400. It might be a case of the volume being set too low or being muted. To check and adjust the volume of the T400, you can go to the physical controls -- round buttons consisting of volume down, volume up, and mute EZ keys -- at the top of the keyboard. You can also do so by clicking on the speaker icon at the bottom right of the Windows desktop in the system tray.
Default BIOS
-
If you still cannot hear sound from the speakers of the Lenovo ThinkPad T400, try downloading the default configuration of the computer's basic input/output system, or BIOS. This is a software program built into the system that uses codes to control the computer's major components, which includes its audio or sound. First, turn off the T400. Then, when you turn it back on, press the "F1" key if you see the message "Press F1 for BIOS Setup Utility" on the screen, or the blue Access button next to the volume controls on the keyboard if you see "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue Access IBM button." If a password prompt appears, type the appropriate password. After that, press the "F9" key and select "Yes" to load the default BIOS and then press "F10" and chose "Yes" to save it.

PC Doctor
-
You can also try running the PC Doctor diagnostic test on your Lenovo ThinkPad T400. To do so, press "F11" on the keyboard or the "Access IBM" button when the computer is turned on and begins to start Windows Vista. The menu that is pulled up permits you to run an audio test of the laptop.
Audio Driver
-
You may have to uninstall and re-install the audio driver of the Lenovo ThinkPad T400 itself. You can find out whether it is defective or not when you run the PC Doctor diagnostics program. Lenovo provides a Drivers and Software page for the T400 to download the appropriate audio driver. Notably, the Web page also gives an alternative option to download the default BIOS configuration.
