Learn the benefits of drinked ionized water.

Ionized water filters, part of the ionizer unit, are increasingly found in the homes of people looking to capitalize on the purported health benefits of ionized water. These claims are not substantiated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. These appliances are not cheap, with a cost approximately that of a large flat-screen TV. Before acquiring and installing an ionizer, learn what it does and decide if it is right for you and your family. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Process

    • The water ionizer, about the same size as common kitchen appliances like microwaves or toasters, is an electronic filter that connects to your water supply. Generally installed in the kitchen, it subjects tap water to a low voltage electrolysis before it is used for drinking or cooking. Tap water is redirected from the faucet into the ionizer. Once inside, the water goes through the filter, which removes some of the pollutants common to public water systems. It then passes into a chamber containing titanium electrodes coated with platinum, where the actual electrolysis occurs.

    Acid and Alkaline

    • Depending on the type of ionizer unit, it attaches to either the tap or is installed beneath the sink. After going through the process, part of the water is alkalized, while the other is acidified, with each coming out through separate areas for use. Use the alkaline water for drinking and cooking. Use the acidic water for all types of cleaning, including skin care. The acidification gives the water antiseptic properties, which makes it a good choice for cleaning and disinfecting.

    Do Your Research

    • Before making an investment in an ionizer unit, find out what types of minerals are commonly found in your water supply. If you depend on a well, have the water tested and analyzed by a water professional. If your system connects to city water, your local board of health can give you a breakdown of the mineral content generally found in the water supply. You make also contact your water company for further information.

    Health Benefits

    • Drinking ionized water supposedly includes various health benefits. Claims made by proponents of ionized water filters and the resulting alkalized water include improving mental alertness; stress relief; anti-aging benefits; better skin texture and tone; fewer aches and pains; weight and body fat reduction and reduced recovery time after strenuous exercise. For diabetics, drinking ionized water may improve insulin regulation. Others may find less need for certain over-the-counter or prescription medications. Consult your doctor before changing medications after regular consumption of ionized water.
