Making time to study can help you improve your grades.

Some students seem to get good grades easily, but others need to work harder for their grades. However, both types of students can benefit from managing their time more efficiently to help achieve good grades in school. Good time management skills can also help you in the future, both throughout school, into the workforce and in your own home.

  1. Study Time

    • Arrange for time each day to read over notes. You don't necessarily need to study each of your subjects every day, but studying something every day will help you improve your grades. The more exposure you give yourself to the subject matter from your classes, the better you will remember the information. Take notes as you study so you can use those notes to shorten your study times later. Even though studying is important, it doesn't need to dominate your time.

    Minimize Activities

    • Extracurricular activities are a critical part of school life for many students. The journey toward good grades doesn't mean you have to give up these activities. Instead, you need to find your personal balance between study time and extra activities. For instance, if you play on the baseball team and work on the school paper, you may find that two activities is too much, and that you don't have enough time to study and participate in these activities. If this is the case, you need to prioritize and select just one activity so you have time to study.

    Make Classes a Priority

    • As you get closer to graduation, it becomes easier to think that class attendance isn't important, especially later in high school and into college. Other activities, such as sleep, hanging out with friends and even working, can feel more important. However, class time is the time when you can ask questions and learn more about the material. Attending your classes on a regular basis gives you access to the information and helps you get better grades.

    Learn to Say "No"

    • Spending time with your friends and participating in fun activities is still important; however, you must evaluate each situation and learn when to say "No" to going out to have fun. For instance, if you have a big test the next day, it is more important for your grades to stay home and study. If the test isn't for a few more days, though, it won't hurt to go out for a couple of hours to refresh yourself. Each person can handle different amounts of fun time in contrast to study time. If you feel you need more study time, take it.

    Use Spare Time

    • Any idle time you have during the day can be used for studying or completing your homework. For instance, if you ride the bus, use that time to read over your notes, read your text or complete a homework assignment. Any time you would just sit and wait is a good time to work on school work so you can improve your grades. However, you need to learn to balance school work and relaxation time so you don't burn out.
