My AOL Crashes When Downloading Attachments
Occasionally, AOL desktop software crashes when a user attempts to download an email attachment. If this happens to you, troubleshoot the problem to determine the cause of the error and then retry the download.

AOL System Requirements
-
As a stand-alone desktop software program, AOL recommends minimum system requirements for users who wish to take advantage of all its features, including the ability to download attachments from email messages. Specifically, AOL recommends that you use at least the Windows XP operating system. If you use Windows XP, you need at least a 233 MHz processor and 128MB of random access memory, or RAM. For Windows Vista and 7, these requirements increase to 1 GHz and 1GB, respectively. Inadequacy of any of these requirements may lead to difficulties in operation, including failure to download attachments.
Download Other Attachments
-
If you experience difficulty downloading an attachment only once, you can determine whether the problem is specific to that attachment or has afflicted your ability to download attachments in general. To test this, open any other email message that has a file attached to it and attempt to download that file. If the download is successful, you know the original attachment is the source of the error. If not, double-check to make sure your system meets AOL's stated minimum requirements.

Large Files and Internet Connection
-
If you access AOL on a dial-up connection or using an otherwise slow Internet speed, the slowness of your connection can cause the software to crash while a file is downloading. The time a file takes to download lengthens the slower the Internet connection you use, and downloads of an hour or more may place a strain on AOL and on your computer, causing it to crash.
Malicious Attachment
-
You may be attempting to download a file that is malicious in nature. This is particularly likely if you receive the email from an email address you don't recognize. Delete all emails from senders you don't recognize immediately and don't download attachments to these messages.
