Alltel Migration to Windstream Email

Windstream Communications is a byproduct of the 2006 merger of Alltel and Valor Communications. As a result of the merger, Windstream automatically inherited all of the customers currently subscribed to Alltel landline services, including Internet and email. Verizon acquired the cellular division of Alltel. From 2006 to 2009, Windstream Communications slowly migrated all of the Alltel Internet and email subscribers over to the Windstream platform.

  1. Effects Of Migration

    • At the inception of the Alltel and Windstream migration, Alltel customers had the option to continue using the Alltel servers and the “@alltel.net” email address. As of May 15, 2009, the Alltel servers were completely shut down, forcing Alltel customers to change the email settings to reflect Windstream. The changes you must make all depends upon the method you use to access your email.

    WebMail Option

    • If you don't want to go through the hassle of changing your mail server settings, check your email online via the Windstream WebMail portal. To access your Windstream email online, visit the Windstream website. Click the “Check Email” link located in the upper right hand corner of the page. Enter your Windstream email address and and password into the designated boxes. Instead of using “yourusername@alltel.net” for the email address, use “yourusername@windstream.net.” Click “Log In” to access and begin using your email.

    Outlook Express Settings

    • To update your Outlook Express settings click “Tools” and “New Account.” Click the “Mail” tab. Click your Alltel email account to highlight it. Select “Properties.” Change the email address from “yourusername@alltel.net” to “yourusername@windstream.net.” Change the incoming mail server to “pop.windstream.net.” Change the outgoing mail server to “smtp.windstream.net.” Underneath the “Servers” tab, select “Advanced.” Click the option labeled, “My Server Requires Authentication.” Type your old username and password into the designated fields. Click “OK” to save and apply your changes.

    Thunderbird Settings

    • To update your Alltel account settings within Thunderbird, open the program on your computer. Click “Tools” and “Account Settings.” Click your Alltel email account from the left side panel. On the right side panel, change the email address from “yourusername@alltel.net” to “yourusername@windstream.net.” Click “Server Settings.” For the “Server Name,” type “pop.windstream.net.” Click the “Outgoing Server” link.” Highlight your Alltel account and click “Edit.” For the “Server Name,” type “smtp.windstream.net.” For the “Authentication Method,” select “Normal Password.” Click “OK” twice to save and apply your settings.
