What Does the ZEDO Cookie Do?
ZEDO, Inc. is an Internet advertising company based in San Francisco. The ZEDO cookie is a small text file that ZEDO customers upload to your Web browser from their websites and that your Web browser sends to the website each time you subsequently access it. The ZEDO cookie allows ZEDO customers to target advertisements directly at you, based on your previous browsing habits.
-
Advertisement Server
-
If you enable the ZEDO cookie in your Web browser, you effectively give the ZEDO advertisement server—the computer responsible for placing advertisements on websites—permission to deliver online behavioral advertisements to you. As a result, the advertisements that you see may be taken from the websites you visit most often, or based on your geographic location, time zone or browsing habits. The ZEDO cookie also ensures that you see a variety of advertisements, rather than a small selection over and over again.
Malicious Software
-
Like all cookies, the ZEDO cookie contains only letters and numbers and no executable code—in other words, it isn’t a program—so it cannot harbor viruses, worms, Trojan horses or malicious software of any kind. Similarly, it cannot interact with the operating system of your computer in any way.
-
Personally Identifiable Information
-
The ZEDO cookie can collect only information that you enter into your Web browser, so it cannot discover information, such as your email address, unless you physically enter it somewhere. Neither the ZEDO cookie itself nor the advertisements it causes to be delivered to websites collect personally identifiable information—such as user names, passwords or credit card numbers—from anywhere on your computer, so there is no danger of such information's being intercepted, or stolen, and used for fraudulent purposes. The ZEDO cookie exists purely to assist the ZEDO advertisement server in finding the advertisements most appropriate to use.
Managing Cookies
-
Most popular Web browsers, including Microsoft Internet Explorer, Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox, enable users to enable or disable cookies, including the ZEDO cookie. However, it is important to note that if you disable the ZEDO cookie, the ZEDO advertisement server has no control over the advertisements that you see. It is possible to opt out of ZEDO advertising, so that the ZEDO advertisement server gives you random advertisements rather than a selection targeted specifically at you. Opting out sets a value in the ZEDO cookie, so if you disable the ZEDO cookie opting out cannot work correctly.
