How to Decorate for a "Miami Vice" Event

Miami Vice was a television series about undercover detectives that aired during the 1980s, a decade replete with color, music and drama. You can take your guests back a few decades at a birthday celebration or other special event by transforming the party venue into a scene right out of the 1980s. Use everything at your disposal to enhance the decor, from the party venue’s walls and ceilings to the guests themselves, to create an entertaining and memorable event for everyone that attends.

Poster Wall

  • Cover one of the walls with a collection of Miami Vice posters and pictures. Use a combination of posters from the old series as well as a few from the movie remake to combine the old with the new. This may also be less expensive than trying to track down a wall full of old television series posters. For a party on a budget, add just a few posters around the room or print out pictures from the computer and decorate with these instead.

Electronic Enhancements

  • Rent a movie screen to place against one wall and have the old television series playing on mute throughout the event. Hang a disco ball to hang in the center of the room and float neon-colored helium balloons. Rent a few old-fashioned arcade games, such as Pac Man to place around the room and bring out the 1980s child within. Play the theme song from the Miami Vice series on an old boom box as you welcome your guests to the party and then keep the evening musical with tunes from the 80s.

Memorable Mural

  • Create a “When I Think of…” mural to hang near the entryway. Write the words, “When I Think of Miami Vice, I Think of,” and have each guest add their thoughts to the mural. The mural will provide some entertainment throughout the evening and makes an interesting keepsake for the guest of honor.

The Guests

  • Announce the theme of the event in your invitations and encourage each of your guests to come dressed in 1980s, Miami Vice fashion to enhance the celebration’s decor. Ideas include bright colored T-shirts and pastel colored suits for men, made popular by the television series. Daring women can brave the miniskirt and wear it with a vintage-style corset and a pair of lacy or fishnet gloves. For a less revealing outfit, consider leggings or an off-the-shoulder shirt and leg warmers.
