Migration Didn't Move Applications in a Mac

If you purchase a new Mac you can migrate your files and applications from an older Mac using Setup Assistant the first time you start your new computer, or you can use Migration Assistant to move the files later. Moving files is usually trouble free, but you can run into some issues if you’re migrating from a Power PC Mac to an Intel Mac. Some of the applications may not launch or function on your new computer.

  1. Non-Universal Applications

    • When Apple switched their computers from a PowerPC processor to an Intel processor during 2006 and 2007, many companies offered “universal” applications that worked on both styles of Macs. But as new version of the Mac operating system were released, and new or upgraded applications came on the market, many of the applications stopped being universal and instead worked only on Intel Macs.

    Finding Universal Programs

    • Use the “Get Info” command in the Finder window to discover which applications are universal. The info window for the application selected will show if the program is compatible. Even if the application is universal, however, it may not work properly if you installed plug-ins for the application that were only meant for the PowerPC.

    Rosetta

    • Mac had used an application called Rosetta to run PowerPC programs, and it could also run Universal programs with PowerPC plugins. Apple stopped support, however, for PowerPC applications and did not include Rosetta in the latest system release of Mac OS X Lion in 2011.

    Update as Needed

    • Before starting the migration, run the utility Software Update on the older Mac to be sure the latest versions are installed. In some instances, you will find the updates will no longer install on the PowerPC Mac and you’ll have to download or purchase an upgrade directly on the Intel Mac. You will only be able to migrate universal applications from the Power PC to an Intel Mac that uses Mac OS X Lion.
