Error When Replying to Email in Thunderbird

When you are receiving an error replying to an email in the Thunderbird mail program, it is important to isolate the issue. Determine whether or not you are having problems replying to all email or one specific email message. If the problem only exists with a specific email message, there is no need to troubleshoot your entire mail program. Focus on that one message. To resolve the issue, read the error message that is generated when you attempt to reply. Although there is an abundance of possible errors, some are generated more frequently than others.

  1. SMTP Error 422

    • If you receive an error message labeled “SMTP Error 422,” it means that the email address you are attempting to respond to is over quota. The intended email recipient has an allotment of storage space on his mail provider's mail server. Either the individual has already exceeded the storage limits or the content of your email response causes him to be over quota. In either case, the only way to resolve this issue is to contact the intended recipient to alert him of the error. He can then delete some of his saved messages to free up server space.

    SMTP Error

    • If you receive an error message labeled SMTP Error 441, the issue is also on the intended email recipient's end. This error means that your Thunderbird email was properly sent. However, there is a problem with the recipient's mail servers. Her mail server is not responding to receive your message. Perhaps her mail service provider is experiencing an outage. There is nothing you can do about SMTP Error 441, except contact the intended recipient and advise her to contact her mail service provider to troubleshoot the issue.

    SMTP Error 442

    • If you receive a Thunderbird SMTP Error 442, it is an indication that there is a problem with your Internet connection. Check your Internet service to ensure you have connectivity. Check your modem or router (if applicable) to ensure there are no loose cable connections. Once your Internet is up and running again, attempt to resend the message. If the connection continues to drop when you attempt to reply to the message, contact your Internet Service Provider to further troubleshoot the issue.

    SMTP Errors 501, 510, 511 and 550

    • If you receive SMTP Error 501, 510, 511 or 550, it is an indication that there is a problem with the intended recipient's email address. To resolve this error, check the “To” field of your email message. Verify that the email address is entered and formatted properly. Once the email address is corrected, attempt to reply to the message again. If your attempt is still unsuccessful, contact the intended message recipient to verify his email address.
