Compaq C300 History

Compaq traces its history back to the beginning of the Information Age boom in the early 1980s. Its line of Presario computers, which includes the C300 model, was there from the company's beginning. The C300, a laptop computer, is just one of dozens of Compaq Presario models released over the many decades of the company's existence.

  1. Predecessors and Release

    • The Compaq Portable Computer, a 28-pound computer with 128K of RAM, debuted with the company in 1982, giving way to a long history of portable products. Compaq introduced its Presario line of computers, which focused on easy accessibility for the home computing market, in 1995 with Presario model 5528. After numerous successors, the Compaq Presario C300 Notebook PC debuted in September 2006. By this time, Compaq had merged with the Hewlett-Packard company, which released the C300's sister model, the HP G3000 Notebook PC, at the same time.

    Features and Specifications

    • Compaq's C300 laptop featured a 1.6 GHz processor with 512MB of RAM. A single-core Intel Celeron mobile processor with a 1MB L2 cache powered the device, which featured an 80GB hard drive. The C300's removable lithium-ion battery provided up to two hours of battery life. This Wi-Fi and Ethernet-enabled laptop came with Windows XP pre-installed. It weighed 6.4 pounds and had a 15-inch screen with a resolution of 1280 by 800 pixels.

    Successors

    • Compaq carried on the C300 notebook series with more than 30 models released around the world. Throughout the series' history, Compaq sequentially upgraded the C300 with models C301 through C313. The series ended in with the release of the C399XX Notebook PC. At the time of publication, Compaq no longer offers Presario notebooks, substituting instead offerings such as the HP Envy, EliteBook Mini, Pavilion and ProBook portable home computing devices.

    Availability

    • At the time of publication, Compaq no longer produces or sells the C300 laptop, so customers will have to turn to personal sellers and second-hand shops. However, numerous third-party retailers offer compatible parts ranging from motherboards to LCD screens to battery cells and AC adapters. At the company's official website, Compaq hosts an extensive library of drivers for all models in the C300 series.
