USB Communication Problems With the Lexmark X5470

Lexmark X5470 is an all-in-one printer that connects via USB or Wi-Fi. However, the 4800-by-1200 dpi printer runs into communication problems if it's missing crucial software or running into wireless connection problems. If the Lexmark X5470 printer can't communicate with the computer, Lexmark provides solutions to solve USB and Wi-Fi connections.

  1. Compatibility

    • The Lexmark X5470 must be connected to a compatible computer or the device won't communicate with the operating system. The printer is compatible with computers running Windows 98 and newer Windows operating systems, and Mac OS X 10.3.0 and newer operating systems. Lexmark X5470 is compatible with 32-bit and 64-bit CPUs.

    Driver

    • The Lexmark X5470 driver is the primary software that allows the printer to communicate with the computer. It's used for USB connections. If the driver is missing, corrupt or damaged, the computer can't recognize the printer. Even with installed printing or photocopying software, the driver is required for computer communication. The printer comes with an installation CD to install the driver. However, if you don't have the CD, download the driver directly from Lexmark's website. If you're upgrading to Windows 7, uninstall the existing driver before installing an updated copy to avoid installation conflicts. Unfortunately, the printer isn't plug-and-play compatible on Windows 7 machines, so you must install the drivers. The X5470 driver for Windows Vista also works with Windows 7.

    Wireless

    • In some cases, a "Communication Not Available" error message appears on the printer's display if the device is incapable of connecting to the computer. This usually happens if the device is connected using Wi-Fi. If the printer is connected via WI-Fi, it displays a green indicator light. If the Wi-Fi indicator is flashing orange, check the wireless connection settings. This problem is mainly caused by incorrect security passphrases or weak signals. The problem also occurs if the device can't find the wireless network. Verify that your wireless connection is working and reconfigure the settings to improve the Wi-Fi connection.

    Firewall

    • Although firewalls prevent unauthorized network intrusion, a built-in or third-party security program usually interferes with Lexmark X5470 communications. If the Wi-Fi indicator light is green but the printer has lost network communication, the firewall must be configured to allow the device to communicate with the computer. If your wireless router has a built-in firewall, you must allow the printer access to the network. Configuring firewall settings vary with different programs and routers. Therefore, refer to your firewall or router documentation.
