Many hands-free devices perform voice-activated commands through the use of voice tags.

As communication technology progresses, more and more users are relying on speech and voice commands to perform functions on their cellphones and other devices. Through the use of a voice tag, phone owners can use vocal commands to have their devices perform various functions, such as dialing a specific individual or opening an application.

  1. What Are Voice Tags?

    • Voice tags are the words a user vocalizes as a command in cellular phones and other communication systems that offer voice control and recognition. When the user says the voice tag the phone responds by performing the function he is requesting. For example, a user may say the words "call Alice" and the phone will dial the number associated with Alice. However, it is up to the user to determine the voice command and to properly program it into their device.

    Uses

    • Voice tagging is especially popular because many people rely on hands-free communication devices while driving or performing various functions. Voice tags allow users to communicate commands verbally without relying on typing or looking down at a screen. While this is increasingly prevalent in cell phone technology, it is not limited to handheld portable devices. Many cars are now equipped with features that utilize voice tagging, such as GPS systems or subscription-based communication services.

    Recording a Voice Tag

    • Voice command recording should be done in a quiet environment with little or no background noise, as additional sound may cause distortions or interruptions. However, after recording the command, most devices that use speech recognition technology allow you to listen to your saved command and re-record if the tag is not clear or is difficult to understand.

    Issues

    • There are many issues that may disrupt voice tag commands. It's usually possible for a user to control his environment while recording the voice tag, but when saying a command on a busy street or in a loud area, the device may not recognize the spoken word properly. Also, names or commands that sound similar may result in performing a different function than asked for, such as dialing the wrong person. Another issue is the user's voice. At different times of the day, or under certain circumstances, such as an illness, the user's voice may sound different and the device may not recognize it. However, as the technology improves, voice command options will become easier to implement and utilize.
