Hotmail POP and IMAP Server Is Rejecting My Password

You can add a Windows Live Hotmail account to a mail client like Microsoft Outlook or Mozilla Thunderbird using POP and IMAP server credentials, which permits you to access a Hotmail inbox from the computer dekstop. If the client rejects your password or other credentials, make sure you've entered everything correctly so that you can access Hotmail.

  1. Incoming and Outgoing Servers

    • When setting up Hotmail in a desktop email client, two essential pieces of information are the incoming and outgoing email server information -- the POP3 and IMAP values, respectively. Hotmail's incoming server is pop3.live.com, while its outgoing server is smtp.live.com. The mail client rejects your account information if these values are incorrect, regardless of whether or not your password is correct.

    Username

    • Another essential piece of information for setting up a Hotmail account in an external mail client is your username. Because Hotmail is part of the Windows Live network, which includes includes "@live.com" and "@msn.com" email addresses, it isn't sufficient just to input the portion of your user ID that comes before the "@hotmail.com" -- you must input your entire Hotmail email address.

    Password

    • Naturally, the password must also be correct in order for the Hotmail account to add to the mail client successfully. If you input a password and receive a rejection, make sure your "Caps Lock" key isn't pressed down and attempt entering the password again. Also, sometimes a simple input error can result in the wrong password being entered.

    Testing Credentials

    • If you enter what you believe to be the correct password and the account still won't set up, try to log in to your Hotmail account at Hotmail.com to see if the credentials work. If they don't, click the "Forgot Password" link to reset your password, then use the new password to set up the Hotmail account within the email client.
