Tips For WebDAV

Tips For WebDAV thumbnail
WebDAV allows for fast access to the Internet for editing purposes.

Web-based Distributed Authoring and Versioning -- or WebDAV -- is a series of extensions to HTTP/1.1. WebDAV allows you to mount remote servers to a desktop to easily access files. Then, you can drag and drop files, allowing you to manage files with no technical expertise. It can be used in all situations where FTP is used. WebDAV can provide the benefits of HTTP that aren’t found in FTP, allowing for encryption, proxy support, caching and strong authentication. Utilize this program to boost productivity and organize complex endeavors.

  1. File Transfer

    • WebDAV can be used in all situations where file transfer protocol is used. File transfer protocol -- or FTP -- is a common method of transferring files between computers over the Internet. WebDAV can provide the benefits of HTTP that aren’t found in FTP, allowing for encryption, proxy support, caching and strong authentication. Use this program to boost productivity by allowing workers to quickly access files through the Internet.

    File Editing

    • Use WebDAV to edit documents on a remote Web server. This saves you from having to download files to a computer and edit them before uploading them. WebDAV makes it possible to create a Web that is easily writable and collaborative. WebDAV can be used to author any media type found on the Web, since it is based on HTTP. Users can author HTML, image files, video and other media. One feature -- namespace manipulation -- allows users to copy or move resources as a website changes.

    Properties

    • Create a search query using DAV:basicsearch grammar. Use the SEARCH method found in the DAV Searching and Locating application to find specific metadata within “properties,” such as publication dates, titles and author names. You can also alter this data using WebDAV.

    Organization

    • Organize the files on the Web server into collections, allowing you to more easily find the files you want. Use WebDAV to manage large file systems on the Internet. WebDAV performs well in high-latency environments -- environments that experience high delays in processing time. WebDAV is fundamentally a file system, and some users might have an easier time using a document-management system built on top of WebDAV.

    Locks

    • Place locks on content to prevent other users from editing it and undoing your work. This also prevents users from performing the same types of edits, eliminating redundancy.

    Software-Program Integration

    • Some software programs can be integrated into WebDAV, allowing users to work on certain aspects of a website and immediately apply changes. Use software that is compliant with the DAV protocol. DAV was designed specifically so that programmers could make their programs compatible with DAV.

    Collaboration

    • Use WebDAV to construct a database that information workers – such as programmers – can access from anywhere. This allows your team to remain highly mobile and perform programming tasks from anywhere. Workers can clock in from home and finish up work while on a business trip. WebDAV is also suitable for nonprofit endeavors where volunteers freely contribute to and improve on projects.
