Not all Navy personnel necessarily serve as seamen.

A career in the U.S. Navy can provide you with job security and benefits for life. However, not everyone working for the Navy is necessarily classified as military personnel. Nor does everyone who want the benefits and stability of a military career necessarily want to enlist in the Navy or any other branch of the military. Civilian jobs with the Navy are available in a variety of different professions.

  1. Opportunities

    • Civilian jobs in the Navy are available in a variety of different vocational fields. Job opportunities are available in fields such as information technology, logistics management, law enforcement and security, finance, contracting, engineering, and various other fields of science. Skilled labor positions for electricians and maintenance workers are also available as are more general labor positions such as warehouse and stock handling.

    Application

    • Those wanting to apply for civilian jobs through the Navy's Civilian Human Resources Office must do so through the USA Jobs website, which is maintained by the U.S. government for all branches of the military and all other government agencies. Those wanting to work for the Navy can apply through the website page developed specifically for that branch of the military. Applicants can apply for jobs by searching by job title, location and even salary range.

    Compensation

    • Compensation for Naval civilian employees is based on a number of different possible compensation systems. The majority of civilians who work for the Navy are paid based on the U.S. government's General Schedule, the National Security Personnel System or the Federal Wage System. Other forms of compensation also exist. For instance, some are paid based on the Defense Civilian Intelligence Personnel System. All pay systems are maintained by the Department of Personnel Management. Pay is generally commensurate with experience and the education level for the applicant.

    Benefits

    • One of the major draws for civilians to apply for jobs with the Navy is the benefits package they can generally expect to receive. Naval benefits include the comprehensive federal employee benefits program, dental and vision insurance, long-term care insurance, a thrift savings plan, 10 paid holidays per year, 13 days of sick leave, up to 26 days of vacation and the opportunity to carry 30 days over to the following calendar year. Employees are also privy to the federal government's retirement benefits package.
