What Is a Sized File & How Do You Open It?
A number of programs use proprietary file extensions for certain files; these extensions are used only by the program that creates them, as opposed to more common extensions such as .txt or .exe. One such proprietary extension is the .sized file, a special type of image file created and used by the "Gallery" online photo image organization program.

Gallery
-
As its name suggests, Gallery allows users to create and organize online photo galleries using a variety of image sizes and formats. Images are resized to create reasonably sized thumbnails in individual galleries so that the contents of the gallery can be more easily examined. Selecting a thumbnail allows the user to view the image at a larger preview size, with the option to view it at full size if the image is larger than the preview image.
.SIZED Files
-
The .sized file extension is used with image files created as thumbnails or preview images. These files are created so that thumbnails and other resized images can be loaded without having to adjust the sizing of the original image each time it is displayed; the result is a faster loading time of gallery folders and image previews. All .sized files are stored on the same server that Gallery is installed on so the software doesn't have to save any image files to a visitor's computer.

Installing Gallery
-
Since Gallery is a PHP-based online program, it must be installed on a server before it can be used. A user wishing to install Gallery must have administrative access to the server and the ability to input commands into the MySQL terminal. After uploading the files for Gallery into a folder on his server space, the user must enter specific commands into MySQL and navigate to the index page of the Gallery folder in his Web browser. The index page will prompt him for basic information, after which the installation of Gallery and the removal of installation files is largely automated.
Opening .SIZED Files
-
.SIZED image files are opened automatically when viewed using Gallery. As the extension is not generally recognized by commercial graphics programs, most programs installed on a computer will not be able to open the files. To open .sized files that you have saved to your computer, they must first be uploaded to the same folder as other .sized images on the server where Gallery is installed. The .sized images will display as previews or thumbnails automatically when detected by the software.
