My MacBook Pro Is Frozen After an Update
After you download and install a software update onto your MacBook Pro, the computer should shut down and restart, then resume operating as normal. If the MacBook Pro becomes frozen at any point in the update process, regain use of the system before you attempt to restart the software update process.

Software Updates
-
Mac OS X notifies you automatically when an update to the operating system is available, at which point you can choose whether or not you want to download and install the update. After downloading the update onto your computer, the MacBook pro shuts down and reboots, during which time it incorporates the update into its operating system. You can then resume using the computer as normal.
Time of Freezing
-
Exactly when the freeze occurs during the update process is an important element of figuring out how to troubleshoot the problem. If the computer freezes before it shuts down -- in other words, when the software update is still downloading -- you know the software hasn't begun installing, so that restarting the process doesn't reinstall software that's already partially on the computer. If the freeze occurs before the MacBook Pro powers back on, however, the update is partially installed, so restarting it from the beginning may cause additional errors.

Consequences of Interrupting the Update
-
It is tempting, in the event that the MacBook Pro freezes before the system reboots, to power the system off and start it up as normal. Depending on the extent of the update you install, however, interrupting the update process -- even if the computer freezes -- may prevent your computer from starting up at all, since important software may only be partially installed onto the system.
Technical Support Options
-
Whether or not you decide to force the MacBook Pro to shut down and restart after it freezes during a software update, it is advisable to contact an Apple professional if you experience further errors or feel uncertain as to which step to take next. If there isn't an Apple store in your vicinity, call AppleCare technical support at 800-275-2273. Note that a service charge applies if you haven't purchased an AppleCare subscription and are out of the 90-day free trial period that came with the MacBook Pro.
