Gmail Padding Problem
Gmail automatically adjusts the padding between page elements to fit the screen size of each user’s browser. If you encounter padding problems, or don’t like the appearance of Gmail on your browser screen, tweak Gmail’s setting to change the density of the page.

Gmail Page Density and Computer Screen Size
-
Google rolled out a new design for the Gmail email service during the fall of 2011. The redesign includes a page density feature that automatically configures the padding between page elements for optimal display on each user’s Web browser screen. By default, users with larger computer screen sizes see a less dense page with more padding between page elements. Users with smaller computer screen sizes view a denser page with less padding between screen elements.
Gmail Page Density and Browser Window Size
-
The density feature in Gmail also applies when the user resizes the Web browser’s window. If you reduce the size of the browser window, you might notice that the padding between each page element changes as you drag the window to a larger or a smaller size. The density change isn’t a fault; Gmail has deliberately implemented this feature so users can easily view important information and navigate through the site when the browser window is reduced in size.

Density Display Settings
-
If you don’t like the default page density and space padding settings, Gmail lets you change the settings by applying a default density level. This won’t completely remove the display feature, but it does allow you to configure the maximum padding permitted on your account. When you implement the default density level, Gmail still changes the density of the page elements but it will never exceed your selected density level.
Configure Density Settings
-
To change the density level on Gmail, first access your Gmail inbox page. Click the “Settings” button in the top corner of the Gmail inbox. From the options menu, select “Comfortable” for the least dense option with maximum padding, or select “Compact” for the densest option with minimum padding. Alternatively, select the medium “Cozy” option. Maximize your Web browser window to see how Gmail displays on the page.
