The question of whether Quicken or QuickPro is best depends on your needs.

In 1983, Mountain View, CA-based Intuit Inc. introduced a home financial-planning software package, Quicken. This product was not the first of its kind on the market, but it became a best seller in a few years, largely as a result of its ease of use. Quicken is part of Intuit’s large family of financial software offerings, which includes QuickPro, which is part of the QuickBooks line. Quicken is geared for home users and QuickPro is geared toward business users.

  1. Overview

    • Quicken is financial planning software for home users or those with a home-based business. A key benefit of Quicken is that it enables users to manage their income and home expenses in one place. It is also regarded as easier to learn than the business program, QuickPro. The individual features between the two products differ largely in scale and in home use versus vertical market use.

    Quicken

    • Quicken enables the user to organize his financial information online, by creating a budget based on income and expenses the user has input. Expense categories include mortgage/rent, monthly utility bills and wireless phone bills, car payments, educational expenses, as well as personal expenses and other expenses the user specifies. Unlike relying on the inconvenience of filing papers in manila folders and storing them in a file cabinet, Quicken organizes these online and creates a suggested monthly spending budget in one place. The user can amend the suggested budget if he so chooses.

    QuickPro

    • QuickPro offers support for a wide range of vertical markets, such as those in the medical and legal professions, outdoor contractors like landscape, real estate and property management professionals, and those in farming, ranching, trucking and construction businesses. Scaled for small- to medium-sized businesses, QuickPro enables users to track the incoming and outgoing financial flow and to know who needs to be paid and who owes money. In addition to basic features such as online banking, QuickPro facilitates enterprise-wide features such as inventory tracking, and it can help the user create purchase orders and set due date reminders.

    Summary

    • Both programs are regarded as easy to use. If you are a home user or have a home-based business, Quicken is likely to suit your needs. If you have an exterior office and you manage employees, likely you’ll find QuickBooks Pro better suited to your needs. Both Quicken and QuickPro are part of a coordinated line of financial planning software lines from Intuit. The Quicken line includes Quicken Delux, Quicken Premier and Quicken Home and Business. The QuickBooks line lincludes QuickBooksPro and QuickBooks Premier.
